Sneak is an extremely useful skill in Skyrim. It allows you to crouch or stand, which is an indispensable ability, especially if you’re on a quest. Just like the other skills, there is a proficiency level in the Sneak Skill, as well. With this guide, you will be directed to reach the highest proficiency in at least 10 minutes.
1. Helgen
One effective technique to be proficient with your Sneak Skill can be carried out in Helgen. If it’s your first time playing Skyrim, the first thing that you need to do is to escape from Helgen. You will need to complete a quest in a cave to learn the fundamental mechanics of the game. With your companion, traverse through a cave and slay the spiders who will try to attack you. After that, he will then lead you to a room, but you will both see a bear. This will now be your opportunity to train the Sneak Skill to its maximum level.
The first thing to do is set the game difficulty into ‘Legendary.’ It will make your companion invincible for your attacks later on. And then draw your Iron Dagger and sneak attack your companion. Do not select the sword because that will take you longer to level up your skill. Daggers are shorter, which means you will hit him more in a shorter period. Your companion is a key character, which means that he can not be killed and that you may keep on sneak attacking him until you reach level 100. Naturally, the companion will move as you sneak attack, and you will lose more time in the process. To resolve this, pin him in a corner where he can not move, then keep on training your Sneak Skill up to the highest proficiency.
2. High Hrothgar
If you need a faster technique, then climb the swirling stairs on the Snow Tower, which will lead you to the temple of High Hrothgar. You will begin your journey in Ivarstead, which is at the west of The Rift. Anyone from all levels can go and train so long as the main story is completed and they have talked to the greybeards. Once you enter High Hrothgar, find a greybeard because he will be one who accepts your sneak attacks.
Climb up the temple’s stairs and look for a praying greybeard facing the window and kneeling on a mat. After finding him, enter sneak mode and choose ‘Legendary’ in your game difficulty. Then draw your iron dagger and sneak attack the greybeard. It would be the best time to practice your Sneak Skill as they do not move while praying. Unlike the companion in Helgen, there is a downside in training with a greybeard. It can fight back once it sees you, so you have to make sure that it doesn’t detect your presence. To be safe, save as much as you could so that you can still keep the points that you’ve made if it detects you.
3. Dragonsreach
It is located in the “Cloud District” of Whiterun and Jarl Balgruuf, the Greater’s castle home. Proceed to the castle and go up the stairs to the balcony. Notice that there are multiple prominent pillars. You will train your Sneak Skill using one of those pillars. Select the farthest pillar and turn on sneak mode.
Continue sneaking onto one of those pillars, and your sneak skill will level up so long as you will not be noticed. Leave your character in that sneaking position until the skill reaches its maximum proficiency. Unlike the other techniques, this one will not make you level up quickly, but you can leave your character to level there without doing anything.
4. Sneak As You Go
If you’ve been playing long enough but still haven’t got your Sneak Skill to level 100, then why not sneak on everyone and everywhere. You will hit that maximum proficiency if you constantly crouch, especially in crowded areas of Solitude, Riften, and Whiterun. Sneaking on shopkeepers would be all the more effective as they do not move. It means that you can easily level up your Sneak Skill with these stationary characters way quicker than the moving ones.
