Since 2014, Banished has been a fun mainstay for many people interested in the city-building strategy genre.…

Since 2014, Banished has been a fun mainstay for many people interested in the city-building strategy genre. It has been highly regarded for its impressive visuals and its unforgiving difficulty for players, particularly at the start of their journey.

If you have been interested in more recent games that share many of the same qualities and aspects of Banished, consider checking out some of the additions here on this list. We’ve curated over 13 different games that share many things people love about Banished, each with its distinctive style and character aspects.

So, without further ado, let’s begin!

1. Spacebase DF-9

For those that love the city-building aspect of Banished while wanting a more sci-fi world, Spacebase DF-9 is perfect for you. Here, you’ll create a population out in the final frontier for several different humans and aliens as they move about their daily lives.

The game will have you mining asteroids, discovering derelict ships, and dealing with the innate realities that come with galactic resettlement of Earth’s population. Meteors, explosive decompressions, space invaders, to even dealing with unbearable loneliness as your inhabitants look out into the vacuum of space and nothingness.

2. Clockwork Empires

If you felt that the difficulty in Banished was challenging, Clockwork Empires takes this up a notch. Based on the steampunk and cosmic horror game, Clockwork Empires delves deeply into many Cthulu-esque themes as you build a colony of different people, each with their own goals and desires.

Here, you’ll be able to build a large colony and community, create your own religion and religious institutions… and even awaken an ancient and eldritch god.

3. Life is Feudal: Forest Village

A great town-building simulator strategy game allows you features and options to truly make your town as you see fit, complete with survival aspects to add a level of difficulty and ingenuity to each interaction.

You play the game as a town leader ruling over a small group of refugees forced to restart their lives on an unknown island. There, you’ll be able to completely reshape the land into how you want, expanding out with orchards, farms, houses, and various other buildings.

4. Planetbase

A fun and engaging strategy game, Planetbase takes you to a remote planet as you manage the survival and daily lives of a colony of humans in an outpost. You play as the Base Architecture, tasked with directing your colonist on what structures are needed for your overall survival.

The game measures everything from obvious aspects like food, water, and materials, to even space-centric inclusions like oxygen and defense against meteor showers.

5. Project Aura

Another great simulation/strategy game, Project Aura, takes place in the (potentially not too distant) future where a colony of climate disaster survivors works. Create a means of survival for the remaining human population itself.

You’ll be tasked with numerous choices, from finding functioning forms of food to deciding whether to trade with others. Or become entirely self-sufficient in acquiring valuable remains from the previous human society that caused all this trouble to begin with.

6. Stonehearth

A nice fusion between Banished and Minecraft, Stonehearth has you pioneering a living world filled with warmth and heroism. You’ll create numerous structures and buildings to shelter your people as well as monitor their mood and emotional levels. While not the most difficult game on this list, every step of your growth and expansion journey will be wrought with challenges and potential dangers.

7. Northgard

If you’re a fan of the Norse-era and Norse Mythology, you’ll certainly be a fan of Northgard. This game takes a group of brave Vikings to a new land filled with adventure and mystery. There, the bravest of warriors will work to conquer the lands while establishing trade and settlements for their people.

Here, you’ll get all of the expected aspects of a city-building/survival simulation game as you grow your settlement from nothing. In addition, however, your Norse men will also combat powerful undead, giant dire wolves, and even dragons and giants.

8. Gnomoria

A fun and lighthearted addition to this list, Gnomoria has you playing as the leader of a small group of gnomes seeking to survive and thrive in a large and bustling world.

What makes this game so fun, outside of its innate city-building aspects, is the use of Gnomish lore and standardized racial traits that any fantasy player will be all too familiar with. Gnomes can build their locations throughout the world and deconstruct any building they come across and rebuild it later.

You’ll acquire resources and wealth as you attract wandering nomads to your cause. Be careful, however, as you may also potentially attract enemies as well…

9. Project Zomboid

A surprisingly good and engaging zombie survival game that does well in the sandbox/city-building genre, Project Zomboid has you struggle to survive a zombie hoard as best you can with death and danger only a moan away. You’ll loot houses, gather materials from malls, and build shelters and compounds to help you delay the ultimate inevitable for at least one more day.

10. Kingdoms and Castles

If you are someone that is a particular fan of the expansive growth from only a small area to something truly huge and impressive, check out Kingdoms and Castles. This game starts you in a small hamlet that slowly, over time can grow into a sprawling city and eventually a large and impressive castle.

Here, you’ll be beset by bandits, raiders, dragons, and even mother nature herself. How well you do is primarily based on your own abilities as a city and castle planner.

11. Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress is an incredible game that marries beautiful 2-D visuals with an intense and intricate world simulation while putting you in the world of the Dwarven people from various fantasy lore.

You’ll build a fortress to help your Dwarven brothers survive or attempt to delve deeper into the earth as a solitary adventurer, seeking wealth and fortune.

12. Rimworld

One of the more… exciting entries on this list, Rimworld is a sci-fi colony simulation game-driven entirely by an intelligent AI storyteller. You’ll simulate various stories based on psychology, ecology, climate, diplomacy, and many other aspects.

13. Factorio

Finally, Factorio is a game in which you’ll (surprise, surprise) build and maintain factories. This goes much deeper than most other games, however. Rather than click a button to create a giant factory instantly, you’ll be running and operating all the ins and outs of the miniature ecosystem, mining resources, researching technologies, building infrastructure, and automating production, as well as many other aspects.

While in the beginning, you’ll be mining ores and chopping trees, as you grow in productivity and manpower, you’ll become an industrial powerhouse, creating trains and robotics to grow your machine empire.

When Matheus Valadares, a Brazilian game developer, first released agar.io in 2015, it’s hard to believe I…

When Matheus Valadares, a Brazilian game developer, first released agar.io in 2015, it’s hard to believe I truly understood the sensation that he created.

On the back of this game’s success, hundreds of other developers have dived into this new genre. Different games featuring somewhat unique mechanics and perspectives were soon on the market, to the stage where today. I love following gaming trends, that they have built a new gaming genre around the original Agar.io has always fascinated me.

We’ve put together a list of the 15 best alternatives to agar.io, most of which have a similar theme, but different in some way.

#1 Cosmic Crush

We start with a straightforward concept set it out of space cosmos crush sees you starting as a smaller planet, and you simply need to absorb smaller ones to grow as you avoid the larger ones looking to absorb you. The neat feature of this game is the gravity.

The closer you get to the larger planets, the more they try to suck you in. Remember, the name of the game is to get as big as you can ASAP.

#2 Mitosis

Another simple eat and grow themed game: you start life as a cell as you hunt for smaller cells to consume. As you continue your journey, you grow larger and faster the more sells you adorable, all the while trying to hide from larger cells trying to hunt you too.

One of the key features of this game is that you can decide to split, which are chances of survival but makes you more vulnerable to the larger cells. It’s an interesting dilemma which tactical approach will take as you try to dominate this outstanding game.

#3 Germ Fusion

Start life is a nasty little germ who’s trying to consume other players and smaller germs.

All the while, you’re avoiding the big boys’ Graphically, this is a cute game, and some additional gaming modes have made it even more enjoyable.

My favorite is the 60-second mode.

#4 Spinz.io

These games are all going to be very similar to agar.io just a little twist on the genre this one is based on fidget spinners as you collect dots that find themselves in your way this makes your spinner move faster sliding with a smaller spinner allows you to absorb some of their mass.

I am assuming you’re getting to see why this game quickly becomes addictive.

#5 Zorb.io

As soon as I heard that this game was based in a 3D rather than a 2d world, I instantly needed to check it out.

Following the same premise of agar io but set in a 3D space, the game’s dynamics and mechanics are pretty good. The closer you come to larger cells, the more they can drain your energy. Keep your distance as you try to survive.

#6 Lordz2.io

This is the one that comes a little out of the left field. It’s a massively multiplayer game set in the time of kings, Wizards, and knights. The game’s name is to create the most powerful, meanest army and conquer the map as you fight to expand your kingdom.

It’s a pretty excellent game. He might be curious how it tickets inspiration from agar.io. the graphics in the game’s mechanisms are the highest quality, ensuring that it’s an exciting and challenging escapade. The medieval/ fantasy twist on the genre ensures you will enjoy it.

#7 Curvefever.io

Divided by this game, I’ve mashed together their interpretation of agar.io and slither, bringing together a game that combines the best of expansion themes and survival. Mainly folks on survival, it’s a super exciting and competitive game.

You have to be precise in your moves to navigate through the game without banging into opponents. The underlying mechanics are well designed, and they keep you out of the constant death loop as you get used to the game.

#8 Slither.io

Many will name this if you ask many fans of agar.io what their second most popular game is. It’s a pretty simple concept you start life as a small snake trying to get bigger as you increase in size; you’ll attract rival snakes’ attention and have to fight for your life.

Eating little bits of food as you go along will help you grow bigger, but the key to success is to kill and eat an enemy snake. The game mechanics are excellent, and it’s certainly one you should add to your list.

#9 Osmos

When combined with its outstanding electronic soundtrack, the graphics alone make this work checking out its short concept track down modes absorb them and get bigger.

The game is often for sale on Steam; remember, you can always dispel matter at any point if you want to get smaller. It might be the key to survival.

#10 Gota.io

The closest game on the list is probably the gameplay and theme to agar.io, but the faster movement and better mechanics make this a superior game in my mind.

As you travel around eating cells, your size loves to increase, but if you absorb something you don’t want, you can simply eject some of your mass to help you dispel other cells you can even divide into smaller pieces that will help you quickly navigate.

#11 Hole.io

As more and more people look to play these games on their phones, we thought we’d add an iOS or Android alternative for anyone looking for a game comparable to agar.io.

This app is very similar in the theme you play the part of a black hole. Your job is to gain enough mass to defeat the other black holes in the city to eat virtually anything from streetlights to the cars and even larger objects.

#12 Nebulous.io

Another alternative to agar.io available on IOS and Android you play is Bob, who has aspirations of becoming a giant blob. The only way to do this is to collect other blobs on the map.

Just remember, if you read a bigger one, run away, or if it’s a close encounter, you can just use blob burst or split this little quickly allow you to avoid being consumed in one fell swoop. As you go larger, you can work your way towards the top of the food chain, similar to agar.io.

#13 Diep.io

Another survival-based strategy game with some interesting power features is that this 2D game is worth checking out for anyone who’s a fan of agar.io.

Use your ability to kill other players and collect coins to reach the next level. One of the key selling points of this game is the introduction of mysterious enemies. These alone are worth checking out.

#14 Agma.io

Another worthy alternative to Agar up what did some additional features included. The gameplay is virtually identical to Agar io.

The key difference being that your edibles also move around the map, so to survive, you need to get bigger much faster, unlike other games in the genre.

You can either pay for free or get a gold membership. This gives you access to nicknames and other skins. On top of these additional features, you start double the size of everybody else and are offered a crown in the chat option.

#15 Pie.ai

They set this in a smaller arena, and it’s a straightforward concept: get bigger or die trying. Eat as many pies as you can while you try to survive in the face of more extensive, faster foes.

You can also eat your way to regenerate some energy as you fight off your opponents. The trickiest opponents are the AI drones, as they will drop a cherry bomb in your path, and trust me; this is not something you want to eat.

If you want to gain revenge, you can either fly jump or eat these. Offering more complex mechanics than agar io. The key to this game is maintaining your energy levels as long as possible.

#16 Villagers

This game isn’t free like many other than the list, we love the richly illustrated graphics and the more thematic aspects of the game where you build the driving community using the resources you’re provided.

Your ability to create a thriving town beside the difference between life and death, and you’ll soon experience a harsh reality of life in medieval times.

We hope this list of games like agar io will prove useful as you hunt for an alternative to keep your interest in the IO genre alive and kicking.

1. Bulletstorm

People can fly a polish game developer are well known for producing some intense shooter style games one of the most famous is a painkiller. The latest release Bulletstorm is one of the unique approaches to this genre in the last 10 years.

Offering an arcade-like experience because of its unusual co-op scoring, this game can only describe the successive from start to finish. Earn more points as you become creative in your methods for turning the legions of foes into a bloody mist. It is as close to borderland as you’re going to get in the style and tone of its gunplay, so anyone who’s a fan of the looter shooter genre will quickly feel at home.

2. RICO

Immerse yourself in this first-person shooter arcade-style game that is being inspired by many action movies. Play on your own or with a partner; you can team up as police officers who can only be described as loose cannons.

4. Dying Light

I’m dying light when a successful game series like Dead Island is morphed by its developers Techland and turned into a zombie survival game.

Some say that this is the number one zombie game on the market. While the characters in dying light aren’t as in-depth as they are in Borderlands, it offers an exciting campaign that’s hugely immersive, and it combines it with some fluid combat modes.

5. Fallout 4

Another wildly successful game series fans are still divided on which version of the game is best. Still, if you’re looking for a comparable game to Borderlands, I’d have to choose fallout 4 as it’s less like an RPG and more like a dungeon crawler as you can seamlessly shift in focus from combat to making expiration decisions.

If the reason you love Borderlands 3 is the sheer number of weapons you get to choose from, fallout four will not disappoint, especially as it’s got a dedicated skill point system that helps you quickly level up.

6. The Division 2

Dystopian Washington DC Division 2 officer more refined shooter games matching together the frames and fray you expect from this game genre with some MMO like features. While the storyline lacks the depth, you’ll find in other similar games.

The feel of the first-person shooting up the game style is highly addictive when mixed with the different gear slots and the feedback loop. It’ll keep you coming back for more. You will need the help of some friends as you scavenge through the dark zone to safely navigate the combination of betrayal and misdirection.

7. Path Of Exile

Another game that’s slightly out of the left field is looking for comparable gaming experiences to Borderlands. Path of exile undoubtedly shares some similar elements such as fighting waves of enemies and your ability to loot.

When it’s not an FPS in the purest form like Borderlands, you also can play with groups of friends, and the setting for the game is truly unique. When I add to the equation that it’s free, it’s undoubtedly where to look.

8. Diablo III

This may extreme like a strange addition to the list as it doesn’t fit the shooter little genre, but anyone who’s a fan of Borderlands, especially Borderlands 3, understands that it’s not just an FPS. It offers much more depth than that.

Diablo allows you to destroy your enemies’ hordes while collecting loose along the way and provides you a very similar buzz to many aspects of Borderlands.

9. Payday 2

If you’re looking for a more tactical loot and shoot game, then Payday 2 may offer just the style you’re looking for.

The heists you have to work your way through with your group of friends take skill and teamwork to work out. Working your way through your skillset, you’ll soon learn the best way to rob a bank.

10. Rage 2

As you learn to deal with your superpowers, you’ll miss your way through a variety of different environments full was exciting characters. Rage 2 was still a loser shooter offers a more interesting narrative and crunchier gameplay, which will certainly challenge Borderlands fans.

As you leave and dash true compounds dropping in on unsuspected enemies, you’ll soon get addicted to this gameplay.

11. Risk of Rain 2

This addictive game is a 3D sequel to the smash hit Risk of Rain. Famous for its item management system and the ability for four players to cooperate, this game allows you to play with various original characters.

You have their skillset, but you can also build on this as you work your way through the game. Every level of the game is a unique mission. Fans of boss beast battles will love this, as at the end of every level, you’re going to have one enormous battle.

Risk of rain is a perfect fit for any Borderlands fan, offering you various secrets, excellent mechanics, and virtually limitless difficulties.

12. Serious Sam

I’m a big fan of the serious series, and I would recommend anyone check it out. The remastered version they released, The Second Encounter, offers you the ability to kill the chainsaws, flamethrowers, explosives, and many other interesting weapons.

It also adds a hint of humor to Borderlands like environment. It guarantees you to quickly fall in love with what we can only describe as a wacky world they set the game in.

13. The Outer Worlds’

This game from obsidian has many similarities to the gameplay offered by Borderlands. Thus, one who loves the communication between characters and the wide variety of weapons you can use will soon become a fan of the game.

The only key difference is the number of weapons you can use in other worlds is intended to be compared to Borderlands 3, but you can become creative with the guns. One thing I liked about the game is the unusual way that the dialogue works.

14. Warframe

When Warframe exploded under the scene just a few short years ago, it brought a game designed to allow players and rest themselves in a funhouse.

Full of unique space warriors where you have to complete its randomly generated missions while trying to upgrade your capabilities to progress.

What we love most about this game because of the developers’ passion for consistently adding unique features to shake up and keep the narrative and gameplay as fresh as possible. This game only boosted its popularity by transitioning to the Nintendo switch and providing a buzz in The gaming community. Not a distributor out of Borderlands this game could be described as an even more ambitious member of the looter shooter genre, and it certainly worth checking out.

The stellar combat sequences of Nioh 2 are what makes it is greatest Dark Souls. The enemy constantly evolves, which makes the game much more challenging. The depth of the game is also much higher than Dark Souls.

In the game, you are a Samurai. The Samurai is a half-human and half supernatural character.

The best thing about the game is that before entering every battle, you have to strategize. You have to choose the weapons accordingly as well.

The intense action means that there is never a dull moment in the game.

With the equally gripping storyline, it is a game that you shouldn’t ignore if you like Dark Souls.

8. God Of War

Kratos, the protagonist of the God of War series, has become immortal in the gaming community.

The comfort of God of foreign Dark Souls is similar. Not only that, since you can choose between different God of War games, you can progress through the storyline naturally as well.

The fact that the game becomes more and more difficult as you progress makes it even more interesting.

The franchise has elements of Greek mythology as well, which makes it even more intriguing.

If you are looking for more intense combat than Dark Souls, you should try out this game.

9. Salt And Sanctuary

Salt And Sanctuary is a combination of Castlevania and Dark Souls. While Salt And Sanctuary might be a game with 2-D graphics, the grim gameplay makes it very similar to Dark Souls.

You have to progress through the centuries to collect the salt, which will help you upgrade your magical skills and ability. Some might call the game to be pretty inspired by Dark Souls. The intriguing storyline, however, makes it much more interesting than even Dark Souls. That is the reason why it features on this list.

10. Middle-earth: Shadow of War

Middle-earth: Shadow of War is based in a fantasy world similar to the rings franchise’s lord. Owing to the same, the monsters and the magic which you experience is pretty intriguing.

The narrative is continued from its predecessor. You continue as Talion. Your character still incorporates a portion of Lord Celebrimbor’s spirit. However, this sequel’s advantage is that the number of characters in the game is much higher than the predecessor. You also experience various subplots where you have to slay plenty of monsters to progress through the game. The action, as well as the magical world, make it an excellent alternative to Dark Souls.

Demon’s Souls is one of the most similar games to Dark Souls on this list. It provides you with a mix of RPG and action like Dark Souls.

You can cast magic, shoot, slice as well as mesh similar to Dark Souls. The multiplayer option makes it much more intense.

This game’s freedom to imbibe your style and play in the open-ended world makes it very interesting.

The customization option of your character and skill-building is another aspect in which it is similar to Dark Souls. Due to all the similarities and the action which it incorporates, it is a game that you can try.

12. Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy XV, just like Dark Souls, offers an open-world premise. Due to the same, there is plenty of action and plenty of monsters to slay. With the help of elemental magic and other features like camping and vehicle-based travel, you can explore the open-world quite easily.

The fictional world, which goes by the name of Eos, is pretty wide. The protagonist, who goes by the name of Noctis, has companions, which help in going through the storyline. That is why it is not only one of the most interesting games but also one with numerous characters.

The franchise consists of numerous games; however, you can start directly with this one as well. The open-world premise, great action, and easy to explore map make it a good game to play.

13. Fallout 4

Fallout 4 is based in the post-apocalyptic world. The number of survivors across the world is pretty limited. A nuclear war caused the end of the world.

The character has to find his missing son. The advantage of the game is that you can move at your own pace and choose your path. You can travel alone, or you can align with some characters as well. The choice is yours.

As you explore the world searching for your son, you can gather resources and then thousands of items, which can help you with your skills and your quest.

The intriguing storyline, the unique premise, and the ability to continually upgrade make this game worth trying.

14. Hyper Light Drifter

Hyper Light Drifter is even more difficult than The Legend of Zelda and Diablo franchise. In some cases, it is even more challenging than Dark Souls. It is one of the main reasons why you should try it out.

It requires you to use your precision, plan as well as patience to go through the game. The fast-paced action in the aggressive bosses ensures that you are always on your toes.

The challenging gameplay and the interactive nature of this game certainly make it a worthy contender to Dark Souls.

15. Ashen

Ignoring Ashen while looking for an alternative to Dark Souls will be a mistake.

The action-packed RPG game will certainly keep you hooked for hours together. The open-world design means that you can explore as much as you want.

The game has a stamina-based combat system. This feature is similar to Dark Souls.

However, the twist is that you will experience quite a few unexpected attacks in the game. If your character’s stamina is not up to the mark, it will become difficult for you to defend yourself.

The gruesome action coupled with the stamina-based system makes it quite interesting.

If you’re looking for games to play if you like Dark Souls, these are the 15 you can choose from. These are sure to keep you hooked if you like RPG games in general and Dark Souls in particular.

Many people who grew up playing retro games don’t decide to purchase a game based on the…

Many people who grew up playing retro games don’t decide to purchase a game based on the sound and graphics as long as the graphics and sound quality aren’t hindering the game.

The part of the game that we all remember once we complete the game is the game’s story.

The most important part of this game is the plot. It wouldn’t be a lie to say there are other games just like Detroit: Become Human except for the other games Quantic Dream has created. But if you are still looking for a game with a great story&Sciencefiction, then you should check out the following games:

15/15 Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy Remastered

The original game was released in the year 2005. This game was doing things that weren’t seen in games back then. There is a remastered version to play the remastered version on current consoles if you never played the original.

This roleplaying game invests a lot into the plot and the possible conversation choices. You can take different paths in the story, and you will have to do some investigative work. Unlike many games that feature only one protagonist, you play as four different people in the story. The graphics of the game will not impress anyone compared to the graphics of video games today. However, the area that this game outshines Detroit: Become Human is the replay value.

14/15 The Dark Pictures: Man Of Medan

The Dark Picture has many games in the series, but the first game in that series was Man Of Medan. The similarity to Detroit: Become Human means controlling more than one protagonist and switching back and forth between these different protagonists.

Every decision you choose will change the outcome of the storyline for a specific character. Your choices could end up killing a character if you choose wrong. One great thing about this game is that you can assign character roles if you have friends with you and then pass the controller back and forth, working on missions cooperatively.

13/15 The Last Of Us

If you like video games that can have a big impact on your emotions, you should play The Last Of Us. Even games released today don’t have the same kind of presentation combined with the Drama that The Last Of Us had. At the time of this writing, we are only five months away from this gaming turning eight years old.

Everyone should play this game just based on the story. While it may not give you as many decisions as Detroit: Become Human, The Last Of Us’ story may leave a bigger impact on the player. If you find yourself liking the experience, then remember a second game in The Last Of Us series.

12/15 The Dark Pictures: The Little Hope

Little Hope was the sequel to Man of Medan. One thing that has stayed the same in the sequel is that you cannot control just one character.

What happens to all the characters you control will play out according to the decisions you made. One difference from Man of Medan is this game focuses on witches, while the other game took place on a ghost ship.

11/15 Life Is Strange

If you loved the decisions with the consequences featured in Detroit: Become Human, then you will love the choices you can make in Life Is Strange. However, this game isn’t just about making choices that influence the outcome of the story. You can also rewind time, which leaves a bigger impact on the path of the story.

You control a girl named Maxine Caulfield, a high school senior who loves photography discovers that she has powers that help her, and Chloe Price investigates the case of Rachel Amber, a friend of Chloe’s who disappeared. This leads to Max and Chloe discovering the secrets of Arcadia Bay. Also, the final decision that Max is faced with will change the future forever.

10/15 Tell Me Why

The same company that made Life Is Strange also made Tell Me Why. Both games mostly play the same, but the consequences of your choices don’t cause as much of an impact as the choices in Life Is Strange. However, your choices will alter how the story is played out.

Tell Me Why excels in the emotions caused by the way they tell the story. One similarity that Detroit: Become Human and Tell Me Why is how much you will end up caring about the characters in each game.

9/15 All Telltale Games

There are many franchises made by Telltale Games. They have games based on Batman, The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, and Tales From The Borderlands, to name a few. The most interesting aspect of these games is to see what will happen in the story. Many of these stories will play out based on the choices you made, which will decide what happens to the story’s characters.

If you want a game that shares the most with Detroit: Become Human, you will either want to play the Batman games or The Wolf Among Us. The Wolf Among Us has you control Bigby Wolf, a detective who interacts with famous characters like Beauty, Beast, Snow White, and a talking pig, just to name a few. Batman is the series where the story matters the most.

8/15 Life Is Strange 2

If you enjoyed Life Is Strange, then it would be worth pointing out that there was a sequel. While the gameplay remains the same, this story does not follow Chloe and Max. You will be introduced to a new cast of characters, but your decisions will still influence how the story plays out.

While Life Is Strange 2 doesn’t follow the same characters, this new story will still affect your emotions when you see what happens. If you thought Life Is Strange was emotional, You have to check out Life Is Strange 2.

7/15 L.A. Noire

Too many games of this genre will have you playing as someone on the wrong side of the law. Just consider the protagonists in the Grand Theft Auto series if you don’t believe me. But if you want to play a game that will have you take the role of a detective where you must conduct interviews and search for evidence, then you should play L.A. Noire.

The protagonist is named Cole Phelps, and you start as a cop, but you graduate to detective. Then you are trying to solve offenses against the law while the story takes place in Los Angeles after World War II. What separates this from other games is you have to pay attention to the people you interview because not everybody you interview will be telling you the truth.

6/15 Deus Ex Games

If you are a gamer who cares about the story, you will want to pay more attention to Deus Ex Go and Dues Ex: Mankind Divided. You can decide if you will complete the game by sneaking around or killing everybody. Depending on how many people you will kill could affect the ending of the story.

The stories in Deus Ex do involve you uncovering conspiracies where cybernetics are being misused. Some may consider the latest Deus Ex games to have a darker tone and is more serious than Detroit: Become Human. This is because the difficulties the society is facing is the main focus of Detroit: Become Human.

5/15 Hidden Agenda

Supermassive games created Hidden Agenda, and they are also responsible for creating The Dark Pictures games. The gameplay is most similar to those games because while it is a psychological thriller, there are a few jump scares included in this game.

The game’s story is that Becky Marney, a detective, and Felicity Graves, a district attorney, is trying to catch the serial killer known as The Trapper. The choices that you make as the story plays out will determine which ending you get. However, only one ending will show you who the killer is, so you might not even get to the bottom of this case until you play through the game a few times.

4/15 State Of Mind

State Of Mind is one game that does not get the attention it deserves. State Of Mind came out in 2019, and you can play it on multiple consoles. This game lacks the attention it deserves because it came out the same year as Detroit: Become Human.

The year is 2048, and you are a journalist in Berlin. The end of the world is a possibility because of machines as well as other reasons. It is up to your character to show everybody what is going on in this adventure.

3/15 Until Dawn

This game does not fit into the same genre as Detroit: Become Human. Until Dawn is a horror game, you choose what paths the characters in the game take.

You choose what these characters say and what these characters do. You also get to decide which characters survive and which ones do not. However, the ones that die will have more gruesome and excruciating deaths than in other games.

2/15 Beyond: Two Souls

The developers of Beyond: Two Souls also developed Detroit: Become Human. While this game didn’t enjoy the same ratings, the developers showed what they could do in 2013, which is the year Beyond: Two Souls came out.

Many games in this list have an ending that depends on the player’s choices throughout the game. The same can be said for Beyond: Two Souls. This game should be checked out if you wanted to see what the developers were working on before developing Detroit: Become Human.

1/15 Heavy Rain

If you wanted to know what Quantic Dream was working on before Beyond: Two Souls, that game was Heavy Rain. It came out in 2010, and it proved that games full of quick-time events could be fun. If you don’t mind the 10 years old graphics and most of the game is quick time events, it is worth trying out.

The game’s story revolves around the Origami Killer and Ethan Mars, Scott Shelby, Norman Jayden, and Madison Paige trying to find the Origami Killer’s identity to bring him to justice. This wasn’t the first game Quantic Dream created, but it was one of the best.

If you have already played Detroit: Become Human, there are many more games to play if you enjoyed that game. One reason is that Quantic Dream created many more games before they created Detroit: Become Human. Even if Quantic Dream didn’t develop the game, all of these games deserve a try.

The Civilization series of video games’ appeal is clear; the strategy role-playing games allow the player to guide an entire nation’s development, from the dawn of time to the near future. Having such power is immense. So, it should come as no surprise that Civilization is one of the most popular strategy-focused video game series of all time.

In fact, since its inception, there have been over 66 different versions of Civilization that have combined to sell well over 33 million copies. And the series shows no signs of slowing down. The latest version, Civilization 6, was the fastest-selling release in the series’ history. But, if you’ve run through Civilization 6 countless times and you’re looking for something new, read on for our top eleven picks for fans of the Civilization series.

1) Age of Empires

First released back in the 1990s, Age of Empires is the second most popular real-time strategy video game series after Civilization. The two are giants of their genre, known for their unique gameplay that allows players to employ multiple possible methods to achieve victory over their opponents; this style is often described as 4X gameplay.

4X gets its name from the conventional strategies used in these games to combat your rivals: eXploring, eXpanding, eXploiting, and eXterminating. Age of Empires has a heavier focus on military action and conquest than the Civilization series does typically. Still, it does have an increased emphasis on the historical empires that it draws on for both the series’ title and setting.

2) Freeciv

Freeciv has been kicking around the internet since the mid-1990s, when it was started by college students looking for a 4X game like Civilization that they could play online. Since its initial release in 1996, it has grown and expanded into one of the best strategy games available and continues to see updates today.

It features excellent customizability. For example, players can choose a graphical style that roughly correlates with Civilization I, II, III or IV, in terms of style and presentation. The best part is that Freeciv is entirely free and open-source software, so it is available on various platforms such as Linux, Windows and can also be easily modded. If you are looking for an old-school, no-frills, Civilization experience, Freeciv might be the right choice for you.

3) Total War: Three Kingdoms

While Western audiences are not as well known, the Total War series remains enduringly popular, with over 13 releases to date. The latest in the series is Total War: Three Kingdoms, which takes place during the Han dynasty’s Three Kingdoms period.

The use and focus on real Chinese history that this game has is unique amongst other turn-based real-time strategy tactics video games. Those who reach the end will certainly have learned something about actual battles and the history of the period; the fidelity to detail is excellent. Like Age of Empires, this series is almost exclusively focused on the military aspects of the 4X genre, but for those that don’t mind this particular flavor of gameplay, there is a lot here to enjoy.

4) Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri

While it may seem like cheating to have another Sid Meier’s game on this list, as he was also the creator of Civilization, the truth is that the man is a giant in the strategy-video game genre and his presence is almost inescapable. This is for a good reason, as Sid Meier has designed some of the greatest strategy games of all time, amongst which Alpha Centauri must be considered.

Originally conceived as the science-fiction version of Civilization, these roots can be evident, and the game focuses on all four quadrants of classic 4X gameplay. In this way, it plays more like Civilization I & II, or Freeciv, instead of some of the other more military or space-exploration focused games on this list.

5) Stellaris

Much like the previous game on this list, Alpha Centauri, this grand strategy game, blasts off into the future and space instead of Civilization’s more historically grounded Earth setting. This isn’t the only place that these two games differ, as Stellaris is much more focused on combat and diplomacy.

This makes its gameplay style more akin to Age of Empires than the fuller 4X experience you would find in the Civilization series. However, this setting and style mean that Stellaris introduces numerous unique and well crafter alien races, whose intentions players must suss out before deciding to pursue diplomacy or war. If all of the options and systems of a regular 4X genre game can prove to be overwhelming for you, Stellaris’ combat-focused style of gameplay might be a right choice.

6) Railroad Tycoon

Suppose you are looking for a different type of simulation game. In that case, you may find that while the business-focused simulation found in the Railroad Tycoon series is different, it can be no less thrilling or cut-throat than that of its strategy genre brethren.

In this series, which last saw a release in 2006 with Sid Meier’s Railroads!, players take control of a train company. In doing so, they must build out routes, decide what goods should be transported, and purchase new locomotives. The challenge and strategy come with trying to outmaneuver your rival Tycoons to gain market dominance. While you can’t sack your rival’s capital like in Civilization or Age of Empires, you can attempt hostile corporate takeovers, which are almost as fun.

7) Imagine Earth

This futuristic simulation game has you establishing and managing huge colonies and cities as you explore the uncharted reaches of space. The game focuses much more on supply management and exploration than any of the other 4X areas.

In Imagine Earth, players will have to deal with the consequences of their ever-growing civilizations in a unique way, with the effects of their planetary colonization resulting in climate change-induced difficulties. As the player explores the galaxy, their trading routes will grow in complexity and length. This makes the game great for anyone who enjoys management of good and trading systems, as they will likely enjoy building up their galactic empire in Imagine Earth.

8) Tropico

In the Tropico series of strategy games, you take the role of leader for life, “El Presidente,” and are given control of your very own island that you may rule as a banana republic. The unique tropical setting gives this 4X-style game a certain charm that can make one feel like they are on vacation.

But not everything is sunshine and flowers, thanks to the game’s unique gameplay system that has you toeing-the-line between liberating and repressing your tropical citizens. Much more than any other city-building game on this list, the game concerns you with your virtual citizen’s opinion of your leadership. If you gain popularity, you may choose to have free elections; if you struggle to manage your island, your people may rebel against guerilla-style attacks.

9) Cities: Skylines

City Skyline is exclusively a city management game, which makes it a good choice for fans of Civilization who enjoy building up their empires much more than they do the exploration or combat components. In the game, players will have control of every aspect of their cities planning and growth.

This means players will be responsible for everything from zoning for housing to building roads. The amount of control that the player has over every infrastructure detail is impressive. They are responsible for making fully functioning power grids, transportation networks, and sewer systems to see their cities grow.

10) Stardew Valley

This charming 16-bit style farming simulator contains much more than meets the eye. Beyond its charming graphics is a surprisingly deep strategy game, which sees players controlling their small-town farm over several years, with each day being played out individually.

Players will start off inheriting the family farm and are tasked with restoring it to its former glory. However, the game’s real depth comes not from virtual farming but its RPG-like mechanics, dungeon exploration, and a surprisingly deep dating simulator. While these features are entirely optional for those who just want to farm, they provide a ton of fun and additional experiences for players looking for a different sim experience style.

11) Slay the Spire

Slay the Spire is completely off-genre from the Civilization series, but for those that might be intrigued by its deck-building card game mechanics and its roguelike style, this game has a lot to offer. Slay the Spire is at its heart a strategy game that requires players to build the best deck of cards possible to defeat enemies and progress through the game’s titular Spire.

The strategy revolves around the management of the player’s deck, for which they are continually getting new cards as they progress. Much of the game’s fun is in trying to get rid of weaker cards in your deck by replacing them with stronger ones. Slay the Spire also manages to remain fresh, even after repeated play, thanks in part to the procedurally generated levels it employs.
